Detail
In 2009 we had the opportunity to work with Manchester music legends James.
They were back together and producing lots of new material, and celebrating this over a collectible series of mini albums, culminating in a box set.
James are famed for their ‘flower’ logo. Regular collaborator Adam Rix, now of Various Artists, came to us with an idea that he wanted to pitch in to the band to 'grow' a flower across new sleeve artwork and tour posters.
We wanted to eak out the mystery - the first album, the 'seedling', is a surreal affair. Using a seed and an embryo as a starting point, we developed and explored an evolving art direction - influences from micro details in nature through to the organic architecture of Zaha Hadid.
We attracted many interesting comments on James' fan forums. From the sublime "a psychedelic seahorse chewing it's way into a walnut" through to the unfathomable "it's clearly a reference to 9/11". (!)
This treatment then grew across tour posters and subsequent sleeves as the seed grew into a stem, and then finally to a flower. The artwork formed the final sleeve art, and also applications across tour and promotional media.
A collaboration with Various Artists.
