In 2010 we created a full graphics package for a new addition to the BBC's range of prime time family entertainment programmes.
Working closely with ex-Red Bee team The Council, our range of deliverables included full opening and closing title sequences, all on screen graphics throughout the programme and a family of panoramic projections for display on the unique 360 degree screen that wraps around the audience and stage on set.
Our creative route was influenced by the theatre of vintage Victorian magic shows and iconography of classic illusion set pieces – harking back to an era when magic was spectacle and entertainment on a grand scale. With influences from Magritte and Georges Méliès to early cinema, special effects and the surreal, our final title sequence included rabbits, levitation, doves and some of the ‘classic’ illusions.
We had great fun creating the sequences, calling in favours from our marvellous levitating project manager Vanessa, and our friendly neighbourhood burlesque dancer - the fabulous Miss Fanny Devine.
The series aired at 7.00pm on BBC1 in January 2011, and a new line-up of Magicians will feature in the new series to air in January 2012.
